Professor Linda Mileshkin is a medical oncologista doctor who specialises in the study, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and a clinical researcher with a particular interest in the treatment of lung and gynaecological cancers, as well as the supportive care of people affected by cancera disease where abnormal cells split without control and spread to other nearby body tissue and/or organs. She also runs Australia’s only specialist clinic dedicated to the care of people affected by Cancer of Unknown Primarya type of cancer that has spread from an unknown point of origin; also known as cancers of occult primary (CUP). She consults both at PeterMac in Parkville and at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg.
Subsequent to training in medical oncologythe study, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, she has completed a Masters of Bioethics as well as a translational research fellowship examining the role of predictive and prognostic factors in patients treated with thalidomide for multiple myeloma. Subsequently she has continued to expand her research portfolio and is currently involved in multiple clinical research projects involving people with gynaecological and lung cancers, plus carcinomacancer arising from tissues that line organs of unknown primary (CUP), as well as phase I trials in multiple tumoura tissue mass that forms from groups of unhealthy cells types.
Her current research focuses on:
1. Early and late phase clinical trialsresearch studies performed to test new treatments, tests or procedures and evaluate their effectiveness on various diseases testing novel therapies for cancer
2. The supportive care of people affected by cancer
She is the international study chair for an international Australia-led government funded phase 3 trial of adjuvant therapy in locally advancedat a late stage, far along cervical cancer, as well as the principal investigator for multiple local and national trials. She is the clinical trials lead for Gynae-Oncology in the Parkville Cancer Clinical Trials Unit and is the Chair of the Gynaecological Tumour Group for Cancer Trials Australia as well as a core member of the PeterMac Department for Cancer Experiences Research. She is also very involved in the Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group (ANZGOG) as a member of the board and the current chair of their Research Advisory Committee.
